MENTORING

1

FILL OUT THE ONLINE FORM

Start by completing the form by clicking below on "Join Us!" when you are ready to begin, and indicate your name, accomplishments in music, and how many years you have been playing. Don't be modest! We want to hear about your musical dedication and talent to be a well-rounded team member! Feel free to list anything you did in middle school and high school too, especially volunteer work with younger children or playing music in your community. Be creative and show your personality! All application forms are turned in online.

INTERVIEWS

Interviews will be offered if we don't personally know you, or if we need clarification on something that you put on your application form. We will send an email to your personal email or call you to set up a good time and where to meet for interviews to get to know you better!

Welcome to our website, future mentors! We are thrilled to have you join and become a part of our team! We are currently looking for more mentors, especially in the Plano, Frisco, and Allen districts that are familiar with band instruments; more specifically, we are looking for brass, like trumpet, euphonium, trombone, or tuba, and a few more woodwinds, like saxophone, oboe, or bassoon. If you play percussion, we'd love to hear from you too!

Our application process is open all year, but spots will fill up quickly so we will divide the application into the fall semester for people that want to join now, and those who are in marching band and want to join in spring. The application will be open all year, but we cannot accept every application taken so we encourage you to get started immediately! We are currently trying to expand our organization, but please keep in mind that this is a selective process, and we cannot accept everyone who applies.

On your application, we want to see your strengths, and most importantly, your passion for teaching others! This is a great opportunity for high school students, and it can count for community service hours, and it is a fun activity to be a part of.

Although this program is fun, interactive, and creative, please be sure that you are willing to commit and dedicate time into this extra-curricular and that you have an idea of what you want to do as a mentor, whether it is where you can rehearse or who you want to mentor.

Thanks for your interest in our program! Our application process is lengthy, but it is all worth it in the end! Start by clicking on the application tab below, and fill out the form. We can schedule interviews in person, if necessary.

Good luck, and we wish you the best!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us!

ACCEPTED!

What do we expect from a mentor?

BECOME A MENTOR:

Where do you meet to give lessons?

SCHEDULE A LESSON

Fill out this form to schedule a lesson. Try to put as many available times as possible so we can find a time efficiently. We will contact you with time and location options within 3-5 days.

What do you do if you're selected as a mentor? We will have a meeting with you to inform you on the general guidelines of how this system works, and your role in caring for our program! We'll meet every other month or so, if needed.

If you're interested on signing up, but don't know if you have time, you can always leave your contact info here so we can send you emails and updates about our program.

Feel free to email us any recordings you want us to listen to and critique! We want to hear from you! Also, add us on Remind101 if you are a student or a mentor in Plano so we can keep you updated.

Depending on your middle school, we'd love to come before school to help you on solos/ensembles as well!

Success! Message received. We will contact you with a specific time and place.

This is entirely up to the mentor themself, whether it is at their house or at their school. This can be worked out with communication with emails or phone calls, or even text.

We are starting this as a club at Plano Senior High school, so if you want to, Plano is a good meeting place. If you are chosen as a mentor, you must be willing to meet with us occasionally outside of school if our program expands.

If you can't give lessons at a school, just be prepared to provide a place for your mentor, whether it be at your home, or if you have to travel to others' homes to give lessons!

We will also start hosting more group lessons or mock auditions during Thanksgiving break or Winter break for those competing at region and area, and those will be notified through email, remind101, and social media to let other students know. Please be sure to accomodate for your students' schedules.

How many times do you have to give lessons?

This depends on your own busy schedule. This could be a one-time scheduled visit, or an every week event. We usually recommend that you start out every other week and then change up the schedule more when you know your students better. This is totally up to you, but you must figure out how to communicate this to your students effectively, and it's always good to start out strong by giving lessons more during the fall so you get to know your students well. If you are very busy, feel free to cancel. The schedule is up to you, and it is very flexible.

Some weeks we will also have group lessons or mock auditions that will need to be planned ahead of time, but those will usually be on breaks from school for convenience.

This is up to your interpretation, and we want you to list out all your music-related achievements so we can get an idea of what level you are at playing your instrument, and who you are. We also recommend that you have leadership experience or previous work with children or teens for music so that you know how to get others involved. Also, we want to see that you were involved in a school program at one point in your life, and what you did in and out of school, pertaining to music. We love to see all-region musicians, and all-staters! Express yourself and be proud of what you did! We love confidence and a great attitude!

Also, you should be willing to give up some of your own time for the benefit of others. You must be helpful and kind, but also you must be responsible so that we can trust you to meet with the team occasionally. If you want a position on the team, we welcome you too! There's lots of things that you can do!

How old do you have to be to be a mentor, and do you have to live in the Dallas area?

We prefer older high school students that are at least sophomores, who have experience with handling other children and teens! (Approximately 15+) Also, you must live in the Dallas region, including areas like McKinney, Allen, Frisco, and Plano. Students can also pick their own mentor, so they don't necessarily have to go to you always, and it could be a one-time lesson, or every other week; feel free to contact them personally, so it is easy to get to and from lessons for the both of you.

If you're also applying for a position on the team, you have to coordinate with us for occasional group lessons, mock auditions, and join us on social media so you could possibly skype your students for quick tips and advice, and listen to recordings sent through our email.
